QUESTION: Why do roller garage doors vary so much in price?
ANSWER: Because not all roller garage doors are the same!
Whilst a roller garage door is made up of many components, this article seeks to inform you about the 4 main cost drivers:
(1) THE CURTAIN:
This is your "door" , which is made up of horizontal slats , and rolls up to pack itself away when the door is opened.
The CHEAPEST CURTAINS contain the highest number of slats as each slat is not as deep as the slats on the mid and higher range models. The aluminium skin on each slat is thinner and offers no realistic level of insulation. If you are looking for any worthwhile level of security it would be advisable to consider other options in the mid and higher range models. One of the other "trade offs" for the price is that the cheaper curtain sometimes rattles a bit in the wind. On the plus side, they are cheap.
Whereas MID AND HIGHER RANGE CURTAINS have deeper and thicker slats. The aluminium skin in much thicker and contains a good internal "sandwich" of insulating material. These are MUCH quieter in operation and have an enhanced level of security. Additionally, the range of available colours and finishes increases exponentially.
(2) THE FRAME LEGS:
The frame legs are 2 separate vertical units that are fixed to either side of your garage uprights. It's the guide that your curtain runs smoothly up and down in. They can be fixed in a variety of ways , depending on your garage and it's intended usage.
Frame legs often come in one standard colour (white) which suffices for some customers. Other customers choose to pay the extra and have frame legs matching the colour of the curtain.
The quality of the frame also adds (or detracts) from the level of security and the smoothness of the curtain's operation.
(3) HOOD BOX & COVER:
The cheapest roller garage doors do NOT have a hood box or cover. Instead the motor and boom are simply mounted on 2 end plates , leaving ALL the mechanism and the curtain exposed.
We will not go into detail here but instead just say... that we highly recommend a hood box and cover be fitted.
(4) AUTOMATION:
Whilst roller garage doors can be lowered and raised manually we feel that this operation is best reserved as a back-up in the event of a power outage.
As you would expect , automatic control units vary in price like everything else. It's important that the control unit not only functions when installed but functions reliably time and time. It is our opinion that skimping on the price to get a lesser quality control unit is false economy. By law ALL new automated roller door installations with one touch operation MUST be fitted with "leading edge safety systems" , so don't be afraid to ask the question.
